Ahmedabad: Fans say he resembles Barack Obama. Now, Hollywood sensation Denzel Washington will dance to a Kutchi number sung and composed by ‘chaiya chaiya’ star Sukhwinder Singh for a Steven Spielberg flick.

Well, even Sukhwinder could not believe it when he first got a call from Steven Spielberg’s team requesting him to compose an Indian song for a forthcoming film starring the Licence to Kill, Mississippi Masala and Training Day star.

 

“They asked me to work on a song for the film. They wanted a song that represents original Indian music of celebration,” Sukhwinder told TOI. Within minutes, a Kutchi folk song Sukhwinder had heard about 15 years ago came to his mind. He immediately zeroed in on the song and wrote the lyrics in Hindi himself.

 

And, within minutes Sukhwinder sending the composition, it got okayed. The forthcoming untitled film has an Indian song to give a flavour of celebration to a particular scene.

 

“I would have gone for Punjabi folk, but I thought this particular song fitted the situation better. Moreover, I wanted to give my best at the international level,” said Sukhwinder who believes Kutchi folk has a unique blend of pain and celebration.

 

“That’s what true melodies are all about – one can feel both the emotions in Kutchi music which has a touch of sufism.”

 

Sukhwinder has had a brush with Hollywood earlier. His famous song ‘chaiya chaiya’ was used in another Denzel Washington-starrer “Inside Man’ directed by Spike Lee.
