Mumbai to get a second airport

Mumbai : There's good news for Mumbai's beleaguered air travellers. Not only will the existing airport at Sahar be expanded and modernised but the city will also get a second airport in the near future.

Delhi and Mumbai will bag the lion's share of the Rs. 40,000 crore earmarked by he government to improve the country's airports, Union Civil Aviation Ministry secretary Ajay Prasad said in Bangalore recently. The tota investments for Delhi and Mumbai airports will be in the range of Rs. 7,000 - Rs. 8,000 crore each and wor will begin next year. This does not include the new airport in Mumbai.

Prasad said his ministry was scouting for land in Navi Mumbai to build a sibling for Mumbai's Sahar airport, which at present handles about 13.5 million passengers annually. However, he sad it would be premature to spell out the capacity of the new airport as "we still do not know how much of land we are going to get."
