Mumbai-born scientists jets into space history

Mumbai: Even as the global space research community cheered the landing of the world’s first asteroid explorer- Japan’s Hayabusa – on Sunday, scientists in Mumbai broke into a quite celebration to mark the achievements of Matunga-born Shyam Bhaskaran. The 46-year-old scientists played a key role in navigating the spaceraft.

 

The capsule, a project of japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa), landed at Woomera in Australia after logging in more than two billion kms over the last seven years

Custom tailor Mohan Ramchandani, 60, was just 10 when he began working for his father before moving to Hong Kong to learn the rag trade, and then immigrating to the US in 1972.

The head of the family and leader of the ‘Chana’ sect 66-year-old Ziona, has 38 wives and 94 children, with some of his sons having married and had children of their own. They all live together in a building named Chhuan That Run or the House of the New Generation.

Unlike the other kids who are fond of watching cartoon characters on the television Hitesh Yadav from Bhandup loves to play with live animals. This young animal lover with a passion for animals and particularly snakes is the youngest member of NGO PAWS (Plants and Animals Welfare Society). Recently, he bagged Robin Age Bright Sparks Scholarship for Horse Power (training in handling and riding horses). The scholarship is sponsored by an equestrian centre and gives the child a change to stay at the centre and interact with ponies and horses.

After Nikunj Raychura died in April 2009, grieving family decided to help someone by donating his eyes

 

One-year-old Nikunj Raychura became the country’s youngest eye donor, when his corneas were handed over to an eye bank, after he passed away at a city hospital last month. In what is a sad but heartening trend, donors seem to be have gotten younger in the recent past. It was only last week that a Delhi-based couple donated the eyes, kidney and skin tissues of their 16-month-old daughter.

Chennai: Renilson Joseph, 34, lost his wife and daughter in a car accident. While the businessman himself sustained multiple fracture, his 3-year-old daughter was declared brain dead. But in his hour of greatest sadness, Renilson signed the papers for harvesting his daughter’s organs, bringing a ray of hope for a 21-month-old Ahmedabad boy, the youngest heart transplant patient undergoing treatment at Frontier Lifeline in Chennai.
